Irving Joseph - Murder Inc. (CD)

In 1960 a little-known American arranger and conductor, Irving Joseph, recorded his own only album. In twelve short, content-loaded compositions he managed to enclose a story of the criminal side of New York of the 30’s and 40’s of the previous century. Crime jazz? A most fitting term.

In 1960 a little-known American arranger and conductor, Irving Joseph, recorded his own only album. In twelve short, content-loaded compositions he managed to enclose a story of the criminal side of New York of the 30’s and 40’s of the previous century. Crime jazz? A most fitting term.

As though in a good book, there are unexpected turns of plot, police chases, courtroom trials and mafia feuds – with the only difference in that they are described with music sounds instead of words. This obscure noir jazz was unusually, imaginatively arranged and performed by leading session musicians of that time (among them associates of Miles Davis and Gil Evans!). Unusually successful, although completely forgotten in the world material which for the Polish listener has an extra dimension: the tune “State's Evidence” has been for many years used as opening credits of TV show “Sensacje XX wieku” (“Stunners of the 20th Century”, show dedicated to history, mainly WW II).

For the first time in history album is available on a CD. All tracks have been remastered from original tapes and music is supplemented by a booklet with the original liner notes from vinyl edition (penned by Nat Hentoff) as well as with contemporary notes on this over-half-a-century old gem.
